There are typically three types of people when it comes to marketing and working out: the dedicated type, the sporadic type, and the tried it and don’t need it type. Unfortunately, I am the sporadic type when it comes to workouts, but am the dedicated type of marketer. The similarities of these two activities came to me as we put the finishing touches on the new Performance Fitness website.

  1. Massive results are never immediate.
Everyone wants to see results right away so they can rest easy that their effort or dollars aren’t going to waste. As a people we have become tied to the idea of getting things immediately. It’s sad because as the old saying goes “good things come in time” and isn’t that true. The results will be there if you are doing things effectively and efficiently.
  2. You need a plan of attack.
Going to the gym or making an ad on Google can’t just be random, it needs to be planned. If you go to the gym without a plan (like I do), often you find yourself wasting time. The same goes for advertising, without a plan you are wasting money because you aren’t taking the time to develop a strategy to meet your goals. Setting goals can be easy, but planning to reach them can be difficult.
  3. It’s harder than you think.
If you aren’t a regular at the gym or a marketer, looking at it from the outside can be deceiving. Targeting the right muscles or the right people is key to success, but isn’t achieved by just giving it a go. Finding the right workout or advertising company can look easy, but there are millions of advertising agencies and workout plans to choose from that you are applying to something unique (you or your business). So pick wisely.
  4. Once you get results, you can’t stop.
Being in shape or number 1 on Google is a great thing, but making it last is a better thing. People who are in great shape don’t stop when they get there; they constantly work to stay that way. The same goes for marketing, if you’re number one on Google then pat yourself on the back and then work harder. There is always competition that can pass you at any moment, remember that.
  5. It’s all about the reps.
We all know the guy at the gym that goes there to max bench each time, but are two reps getting you stronger? It probably is, but any good trainer or marketer will tell you repetition will yield the best results. At the gym, you are always working your muscles so you can demand more out of them and you do that with more reps. Repetition in marketing is brilliant, Progressive and Geico commercials probably annoy you as much as me, but when you think of insurance I bet you think of them first.
